What To Expect Before, During, and After Your First Massage

Jan 24, 2024

If you’ve never had a massage, the first one can be both exciting and scary. So today, I’d like to help unravel the mystery.

First, determine what you want or need. Are you looking for a relaxing experience or are you looking to get help with a chronic condition? Then choose a spa or clinic that helps fit that need. Call and schedule an appointment. It’s recommended to call for the first appointment because they will be able to answer any questions you might have and it gives them the opportunity give you information regarding your appointment and what is needed.

Common questions range from “how much does an appointment cost?” To “can you help me with (insert ailment here)?  What kinds of massages are there? I’m not sure what I need or want, can you suggest something for me?”

The clinic or spa can help recommend a therapist that suits your particular need based on information you give them in that first phone call.

They will want an email address and phone number so  you can receive confirmation of your appointment along with anything else that might be important to know before your appointment. You will be given information such as their location, cancellation policy, where to find the health history form and why it’s important that you complete one. In some cases, you may be required to pay up front depending on when the appointment is booked and if it’s within their cancellation period.

So, you booked your appointment, now what?

When you arrive and check in you will be asked if you have completed the health history form. If you haven’t you will be given the form to complete. Why does your therapist need to know about your medical history? It’s important because this insight gives the therapist information that is helpful when determining how to approach your treatment.

Next, your therapist will introduce themselves to you and take you to the treatment room. Your therapist will take a few minutes to go over your health history with you and ask you what you would like to accomplish during your treatment. Your therapist will leave the room while you undress to your comfort level. After giving you a few moments to get on the table and under the sheets they will knock on the door to make sure you are ready to begin treatment.

Treatment will begin and your therapist may use different techniques depending on the body part and treatment plan. Only the body part being worked on will be uncovered, the rest of your body will be covered with sheets or blankets to maintain privacy.

Communication is key! Your therapist will check in with you to make sure you are comfortable and if the depth of the pressure is too much or not enough. Do not be afraid to speak up if you are uncomfortable or feeling any pain, or if you have questions regarding technique.

Focus on relaxing and breathing, this is a time that you set aside for your self care. You will get more out of your treatment if you can relax and enjoy it.

Once treatment is over, your therapist will leave the room allowing you time to dress. When they return to the room they will give you some after care instructions.  It’s important to follow their instructions, which may include the importance of drinking water or stretches that may help with your condition.

Other things that are helpful to know:

  • Dress comfortably
  • Be on time- being late shortens your appointment time. (if you haven’t completed your health history form, arrive early!)
  • Be respectful of boundaries, inappropriate behavior will not be tolerated and your session will be terminated immediately.
  • It’s not a cure! Massage is not a substitute for proper medical care, but it can help relieve pain, stress, tension and help with certain chronic issues.
  • Cancellation policy- Most spas or clinics have a 24 hour cancelation policy, so if you can’t make your appointment please be respectful of that policy.
  • Cleanliness-Please show up to your appointment clean and wearing little or no fragrances or scents.
  • Tipping-Most spas tipping policy is 15%-20% added on to your session fee and prefer cash tips. Others will allow you to add the tip onto your credit or debit card. Tipping policy for medical or therapeutic clinics can differ from spa settings. Some clinics have a strict no tipping policy while other allows it. If you have questions about the tipping policy it’s best to inquire to avoid any confusion.
